Comparing Mayweather-Show To Tyson-Austin
(Money May at Wrestlemania is on everybody's mind today, and who better to break it down for us than Mr. Jarry Park himself, The Franchise... take it away Chise...)
I’m still not over the site of Floyd Mayweather in a WWE ring. Honestly, I had a hard time sleeping Sunday night just thinking of it. I haven’t been this excited for a celeb-wrestling angle since Pacman Jones joined TNA! Just kidding. No, I haven’t been this amped since Mike Tyson appeared on RAW in January 1998. That angle ranks as one of the best ever in my books.
So, I got to thinking: Can this angle actually trump Tyson-Austin from ten years ago? I most certainly think so.
First off, let’s remember why Tyson-Austin was so great:
1. It came during one of the hottest eras in WWF/E history. The Attitude era.
2. It involved the biggest stars in the company (Austin and Vince McMahon) and later the hottest faction in the promotion (DX).
3. It seemed very “real.” I never got that feeling from the Trump-McMahon angle or even the KFed one.
Now here’s why Mayweather-Show (if executed correctly) will be better:
1. Mayweather is currently the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Tyson was way past his prime.
2. Mayweather is a MUCH better talker than Tyson. I always held my breathe whenever the cameras were on Iron Mike because it seemed as though he was very lost out there.
3. It looks like Mayweather will be competing. Obviously, Tyson didn’t.
4. During his hiatus from wrestling, Big Show had been training to become a pro boxer. So, if they do have a boxing match at ‘Mania he will definitely be able to make it look as real as possible (I highly doubt that match would be a shoot. I just can’t see Show dropping to 154 lbs). The rumor de jour is that the WM match will be Rey Mysterio and PBF vs. Big Show and Shane McMahon. This doesn't sound as sexy as a Floyd-Show boxing match but I guess it's wishful thinking to ask him to compete in any kind of singles match.
I must say, though, that my excitement weakened a bit after watching RAW last night. I thought the WWE dropped the ball in their progression of the angle. I mean, what was up with having Big Show apologize for his actions? Floyd had just legitimately broken his nose! They should have had Show come out all pissed off, call out PBF and demand a match right then and there.
Then, Floyd and his crew come, he says he doesn't back down from anybody but never fights for free (he does hold the all-time PPV buy rate record, you know). So they agree to fight at 'Mania. Keep it simple, guys.
Nevertheless, this should be an exciting ride for the next five weeks. Plus, as long as we can continue to watch Leonard Ellerbe's superb acting skills I will be a very happy man.

Wait a minute. Am I supposed to be believe that Floyd actually broke the dude's nose?
That's 100% real. No joke. Floyd didn't pull his punches and actually broke Show's nose. I love him.
Also, his entrance music was Fity's "I get Money." I jumped out of my seat after hearing that.
One thing I forgot to mention in my post: The WWE is making a HUGE mistake positioning Floyd as a good guy (babyface). The WWE crowd doesn't like him much like they didn't like Tyson. Plus, the man is a natural Heel (bad guy). It just makes so much more sense to make him a bad guy from the get-go because you don't want the crowd to shit all over the angle.
Also, if Roger Mayweather doesn't make an appearance at some point it will be a travesty.
Oh man, Rog. The Mamba is more WWE than the WWE son!
All this shit just costs me fucking money. Of course I got to buy Wrestlemania now... I can't believe I have to buy that shit.
I really don't believe this?..I go to the UK for a couple of days and come home to this?
Money is doing his best to keep his name in the mainstream, he has smart people in his camp....
I hope the only reason this article is here is because of Floyd. I say this because wrestling is not a sport. It is nothing more than a violent circus, played by athletic actors. What they do certainly takes skill and athletic ability, but personally I have no time for WW anything, and I don't really see its relevance whatsoever other than the fact that a real athlete, PBF, is slumming. You may now all flame me as you like...
knowing nothing of wrestling, I gotta ask, how big exactly is this big show character? he looks massive!
and that's some scary tan line on steve austin..
They bill Big Show as 7 feet, 500 pounds but I would guess he is actually more like 6"7 and around 320 (he just lost a ton of weight).
Kopper - I don't hate you for your comments. I just want to piledrive you.
Just kidding, it's certainly not for everyone...
This is too funny. I love that...it is 100% real that he broke his nose. Vince is one slick guy so I'm not going to say it was fake...but I'm thinking it was. I'm LMAOL here about you having to buy more PPV shows now...haha!
That pic of Mike giving Austin a wedgie is disturbing.
kooper, dont sweat the 'chise.
he gives the mma/wrestling scoop du jours.
I don't have any issues with MMA at all. I enjoy watching it and while I prefer boxing, MMA is satisfying. I definately prefer the bruisers in the sport over the submission guys, but I don't know enough about it to really judge. And I didn't want to come down too hard on 'chise either, its just that Vince McMahon needs to run for public office as his talents are being wasted. What he has created and how many people he has hypnotized is nothing short of remarkable. That doesn't make the product anymore palatable, but nonetheless, there are literally millions of people begging for this stuff to be real, even though the smart part of their brain knows its fake.... To make people want to believe the way McMahon has done is nothing short of L. Ron Hubbardesque.
I couldn't disagree with you more, Kopper. I don't know any wrestling fans who are "begging for this stuff to be real." I watch wrestling for the same reason my buddy watches "Lost" - Entertainment. However, I like it even more because it involves athleticism and all the aspects I love about boxing and MMA. You know, fighter A wants to kick fighter B's ass and they will get it on. I don't care that it's predetermined. Actually, I kind of like the fact that it's scripted. We have to deal with enough reality in our lives so a little fiction never hurt anyone.
And Vince McMahon would definitely argue that his talents aren't being wasted. I'm no Vince lover, that's for sure, but I think the man has something like 800 million reasons why he chose the right profession. Without a doubt the most successful fight promoter who ever lived.
I totally respect that it isn't everyone's cup of tea but please don't assume all wrestling fans are complete morons for following this stuff. There's no difference between WWE and CSI yet, for some reason, everyone gets very hot under the collar when wrasslin' seeps into their sports world.
Fair enough 'chise. I just find it so very hard to believe that Money May, someone with a well documented case of weak hands, who needed excessive treatment for them before the Hatton fight, could possibly subject them to harm by hitting someone without gloves on someone's head and face. I just refuse to believe that he hit anyone full force in the face on unprotected hands. I choose not to believe it and you do. Does that not qualify as "begging for it to be real?"
Call me a skeptic, but its how I feel and while I don't like wrestling, I respect your passion for it and won't beat the dead horse anymore. Sorry to hijack this thread with negativity. I realized after my post that it might have been inappropriate.
No worries, I always love debating the merits of pro wrestling.
One last note - I actually have sources/friends who work for WWE. These are legitimate employees who are in the know. They are the ones who told me PBF broke Show's nose.
I am long past the point of trying believe this stuff is real - especially now that I write about this stuff on JarryPark.com and No Mas. I would never pretend something is real if it were in fact fake. So, no begging here...
