The Pope of Dope
Le Monde dropped an apparent bombshell today with a headline story that links disgraced Spanish sports doctor Eufemiano Fuentes with Spain's biggest football clubs, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Fuentes was a central figure in Operation Puerta, a doping investigation into cycling that decimated last year's Tour de France and forced the withdrawal of many top-tier cyclists, including pre-race favorites Ivan Basso and the '97 Tour champion, Jan Ullrich.
In an interview with Le Monde, Fuentes said that he had worked with many top football clubs in Europe, but he refused to name names because of threats he has recieved. "I was told that if I told certain things," he said, "my family and myself could have serious problems. I've been threatened three times and it's not going to happen a fourth time."
Nevertheless, Le Monde (apparently unconcerned with the safety of Fuentes or his stupid family) asserted that it had irrefutable proof that the doctor had worked with Real and Barca. Both clubs, along with Fuentes himself, denied the allegations. No word yet as to whether Fuentes was at gunpoint during this denial.
I have only one comment on this story: Is anyone in the world not currently implicated in a doping scandal? Am I currently implicated in a doping scandal? Am I on roids? I don't even know anymore.
Le Real Madrid et le Barça liés au docteur Fuentes (Le Monde)
Real, Barca disown Dr. Dope (The Australian)
