Predictabo

You'll have to excuse our complete ignoring of the Pacquiao/Barrera throwdown here at No Mas this week. What with the Phils and the Yanks getting their asses handed to them, we've had a lot on our minds (and our asses). I thought about getting my prediction up on the site yesterday afternoon, but I was so busy intoning what turned out to be a highly pointless series of seances and incantations on the Phils' behalf that I never got around to it.

So I can't really take credit for this one in that I'm now releasing it to the world after the fact, but I had Pacquaio winning a lackluster decision, which is how it sounds like it ended up. I didn't watch (Phils... or should I say "picnic, lightning") and it doesn't seem as if I missed a whole lot. HBO made a game effort at convincing me, us, in the Countdown show that Pac Man was heading the way of Tyson with the partying and the ladies and whatnot, while Barrera the crafty, clean-living veteran was staking his career and his family and his country on winning this fight for the forces of good.

Dah... I didn't take the bait for one second. More than anything, I figured that Barrera would try to box the shit out of Manny and stay outside the wheelhouse of Pac Man's straight left hand, or as I like to call it, his "Filipino Soon-You-Will-See-No-Mo." You knew Marco wasn't going to let himself get knocked out, and you knew he didn't have the firepower to stop Manny, and so it had scorecards written all over it. And so it was, onto the scorecards where Herr Pac had the victory comfortably, unanimously. Bring on Marquez, sayeth The Pac. If you're looking for an excellent round-by-round account of the fight, look no further than our very own Unsilent Majority's treatment over at Deadspin. (Turns out Unsilent has a weekend gig at this Deadspin site. And you know what? I was checking it out, and I'm telling you, No Masians, I think this "Deadspin" has a real future in the online sports universe. I wouldn't be surprised to see it catch on big-time.)

besides JMM...does anyone else think that crafty old Casamayor could still maybe pose some stylistic problems for Pac? i can't really see anyone else at jr.lightweight or lightweight who can test him right now. i'd like to think that Guzman would give him a nice run, but i'm not a total believer yet.

I think Pac would knock out Casamayor inside of 6 - I think Joel would have a little trouble making 130 at this point. Little Tyson? That bout is definitely coming, but I think they'll let Guzman try to make a star for himself on his own before they make that fight, so it's PPV-material. Just because of the way his name has grown, I think Edwin Valero will get a crack at Pac before Guzman does (and I think Manny will knock him the fuck out). It's true that with the decline of the great Mexicans, you wonder what other big fights are out there for Pacquiao at 130. I have to believe that Chris John is in the offing, because it's an interesting fight, as well as beng a big regional attraction. I think the best thing we can all hope for right now, and it's certainly not improbable, is that Marquez beats him and they fight a third time. If Marquez beats Pac twice, it almost redeems his legacy against his two much more famous dopplegangers.
