European All-Star Cup
Now Hear This!! With all the exicitement stemming from the 2006 World Cup, I've got a new idea for a futbol tournament...The All-Star Cup (we can find a better name later). Think of it as a mixture between the World Cup and the Club Championships... It goes like this: every year each European country would decide (via player/management voting) a 23 man All-League Team to represent its' top league. These multi-national, all-star squads would then be seeded - according to the Champions League/European Cup/UEFA titles won by each league historically - in a single elimination tournament to be played sometime during the month long holiday break. The aim would be to determine which league is actually the "best" (I'll take the Spanish All-Star team, because La Liga is by far the best league in my opinion, even with my beloved Depor deep in crisis). The country/league that wins the torneo will receive an additional Champions League spot and the right to call themselves the best league in the world. Just imagine a match featuring the EPL and La Liga. It would be absolutely insane. Henry, Rooney (and now Shevchenko) roaming upfront with Puyol and Roberto Carlos chasing them. Or what about the Bundesliga versus Serie A? Or Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie? You see what I'm getting at? These matches would be pure talent against talent. Now I know that these players are playing too many games as it is already (just ask Ronaldinho), but with the constant player movements and transfers, each year the game and the players would be different, and it would give some great players a chance to finally play juntos.... Zidane and Riquelme in the same midfield, Eto'o and Ronaldo attacking together. My mouth is watering... Send me your sample teams for the leagues that matter. Who knows, maybe 2007 will be the year that the Polish Football League finally wins it all.
PS: Sadly, Ronaldinho lost me for good when he wore that headband with the "R" on it. That was a bit too much for me.
