The Swede Down Under

On this day in 1988, Mats Wilander defeated Pat Cash in the Australian Open men's final in an epic five-sets - 6-3, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-1, 8-6. It was the first of three Slams Wilander would capture on the year - he also won the French and the U.S. Open.

Prior to Wilander, no one had won three legs of the Grand Slam since Rod Laver won all four in 1969. And since Wilander managed the trifecta in '88, it's only been done twice, both times by the Fed, in 2004 and last year. Odd that Wilander should find himself in such rarified company. He was great, but not Laver/Federer great. Also odd that Sampras never managed a three-fer. Obviously he never won the French, and he won the Australian only twice, in '94 and '97. In both of those years he won Wimbledon but not the U.S. Open.

Laver remains the only man to win the Grand Slam, and he did it twice, in '62 and '69. It's a testament to what an amazing achievement that is that with all the dominant players to follow - Borg, Mac, Lendl, Sampras, Fed - no one else has been able to manage it once, let alone twice.

Dayam - no love for Mats in the comment section? That's a shame because this guy is definitely one of the most underappreciated players in the game. He was the next great Swede after Borg and no one remembers him even though he won several slam titles.

This was an era where I was very into tennis. Wilander was a quiet humble guy who had a very graceful game and put it all together one year - 1988. He did win the French and the Australian on a few other occasions I believe - so he wasn't a Mark Fidrich or anything.

The great thing about Mats that year - besides the class he exuded with his game - was that he whipped Ivan Lendl in the US Open finals and knocked Lendl out of the no. 1 spot in the tennis rankings.

I always thought Lendl was the biggest shmoe in the history of tennis. Just a real smug, cocky, jackass of a man. To see classy Mats whip him and knock him out of the no. 1 spot was just awesome.

Oh yeah - don't forget that epic Davis Cup match between Mats and McEnroe that Mac won after about 180 hours of tennis. Mac running around the court with the flag afterwards - good times.

All good stuff Kurt. Yeah Mats was seven Slams - he was the real deal no doubt. And that Open final against Lendl was a classic. The Mac/Mats match, Jesus. Six hours plus. Guy had a great game, just not much of a personality, seems to get lost a little when people talk old-time tennis.
