Black Friday

This is morbid, I know, but during my daily research I was struck by the sporting (and I invoke the word in a loose connotation) deaths that have occurred on this day in history, many of the tragic, before-their-time variety. So here they are, quite a group, including the immortal pictured above. A moment of silence for these fallen heroes:

Nick Tosches' (Tuschi or Toecheese as we like to call him over here at No Mas) "The Devil and Sonny Liston" is a decent read although Tuschi proves himself to be a bit of a ponce which is weird for a boxing writer.

Remnick's "King of the World" is Ali rather than Liston centric, but gets at the Liston story very well through the two Ali fights.

Also you shoul watch William Klein's documenatry "The Greatest". He is a Frenchmen I think or a transplant and if you haven' seen that yet you will love it. The footage around the 1964 fight will teach you a lot of what you want to know.

Thanks NoMasLand, I like the efficiency.
I always thought of The greatest as a movie and not a documentary since James Earl Jones plays malcolm X. Or is it another flick I'm confusing it with?

yeah, I read 'The Devil and Sonny Liston' sometime last year. I thought it does a good job of portraying Liston as a tragic figure who up until his death was constantly being used by people.

You want the other, greater "Greatest". "The Greatest" by William Klein. It has an illustrated cover. It is amazing. You will dig it or you will be excommunicated.Apparently Klein also has a documentary about the 1982 French open which Large has seen and I am hot to view. As you are in Franceland, you should be able to find that too. It's not available in the States. Happy hunting.
