Just a little shout-out here for whitey - the white dude is Peter Norman of Australia (no relationship to the Shark). He wore a human rights badge to participate in the protest. Despite the deeply meaningful badge, however, he, uh, don't exactly look too comfortable up there.

did you know he died the week before last? Smith and Carlos came down here for his funeral. Apparently they became great mates for life after that incident. Also Norman's wearing of the badge brought him no small amount of grief in the aftermath in aus which was one of the most insanely racist places in the world at the time. I've heard stories in the wake of his death that his solidarity with Smith & Carlos cost him a run in Munich, though this may well be garbage...
I certainly did not know that Peter Norman died last week. I wouldn't have been so flippant. And yes, the Aussies could give the deep south a run for its racist money any day of the week. Their aboriginal policies made the KKK seem like a debate club.
