Dem bums done good
On this day in 1955, years of frustration and second-class citizenship came to an end for Brooklyn baseball fans, as the Brookyln Dodgers won their first and only World Series, defeating the Yankees 2-0 in a game 7 nailbiter.Gil Hodges knocked in both the Dodger runs, Roy Campanella in the fourth and Pee Wee Reese in the sixth (here's the boxscore of the game.) Meanwhile, Johnny Podres blanked the mighty Yankees with a complete-game shutout. It was Podres second complete game victory in the series, earning him the MVP award in the first year a World Series MVP was named.
Perhaps the most memorable play of the game was Sandy Amoros' running catch of a Yogi Berra line drive in the bottom of the sixth. Amoros then doubled up Gil McDougald off second, ending the Yankees best scoring threat in the game.
After the game, Vin Scully made the famous radio announcement, "Ladies and gentleman, the Brooklyn Dodgers are the champions of the world," words many Brooklynites had waited to hear all their entire lives.
