Uncle Rog

posted by Large

Guys, below I bring you my Roger Mayweather piece from over at The Sporting Blog. Due to the blatant hotness of the woman, there’s a lot of speculation out there about whether the relationship between Rog and “Guard Your Grill” St. Vil (and allow me to add… that is one seriously hot nickname) was, dah, beyond professional. I guess we’ll be hearing about that soon enough.

To sum up, my take is that this incident hurts Floyd the promoter much more than it hurts Floyd the boxer. In my opinion, Floyd needs a compelling 24/7 to get this fight up on the marquee of people’s minds, and when one of the major characters of the ongoing miniseries of his life is out there choking women out and making them spit blood, well, it definitely makes the Evil Empire of the Mayweathers seem almost too evil for prime time. It’s hard to laugh about what a rollicking crazyass character ole Uncle Rog is when you dwell on that shit too much. 24/7 had done a nice job of putting the grandmother abuse in the rear-view mirror, but this thing brings it all back home. Darkness visible, innit?

What do you dudes think? Does this incident have any lasting impact on the Mayweather/Marquez promotion or does it blow over? Or does it (I shudder to write this) maybe even help the promotion?

The Roger Mayweather Incident (The Sporting Blog)
“…you have to wonder if this recent storyline with Uncle Rog isn’t too gruesome for even HBO to want to face head on. The 24/7 series has been built on celebrating the antics of the Mayweathers, but this, choking a woman and making her spit blood, is nothing to celebrate, to put it mildly. The situation at the very least will remove Roger from the light of the cameras, and even more, may cast a pall over the coverage of the whole Mayweather training camp.”

I don’t think it hurts the promotion at all. Roger’s character in the 24/7 shows is more comic relief than star. Floyd Jr is the star of the show, he’s why people watch…Roger and Sr. are simply the odd, rough role models which helps the viewer understand why ‘Money’ acts like way he does.
I understand that Floyd has nothing really to learn boxing- wise, but I don’t really think that’s the point. Roger’s role wasn’t to teach Floyd, rather it was to prepare him. If he’s not there I think it will, maybe in a very small way, hurt Floyd’s preperation. I seen some of the greatest fighters simply not look as good once they change trainers. Duran never looked as prepared after Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown were gone. Leonard never looked as prepared after he split with Angelo Dundee. Hearns never looked right when Steward wasn’t in his corner.
Manny Steward use to say the trainers job is more about getting them ready mentally than physically. Training camp was a place to get their heads straight, ready to fight. Manny told a story once about getting Hearns prepared before the first Leonard fight. Tommy wanted to play softball every day while he was training in northern Michigan for the fight. As the fight grew closer, Manny told him he could play anymore. Too much was at risk. A friend of Steward’s who was there when Manny told Tommy “no”, said Manny should lighten up on Tommy and let him be his own man and make his own decisions. To Manny shock, he told Tommy that Ali was the boss at his camps and Tommy should be the boss at his own camp.Tommy agreed. He went to play, defying Steward. Steward was pissed. He felt he lost Tommy mentally. It wasn’t the focused, organised camps he was use to. Manny to this day thinks it effected the outcome of the fight. I don’t know. I do know fighter’s are not simple athletes. They are very complex. I think if anything would be effected by Roger not being at camp it would not be the promotion it would be the preperation/performance.

Does Little Floyd have Dad come back into the picture…a great little drama for 24/7. Or does Floyd give his Dad the bird and go with Freddie Roach? I don’t know, then how does the Manny v. Floyd fight play out when Floyd gives Freddie more money to train him?

i cant see anyone but sr. replacing rog if rog is indeed unable to take part…they have been hanging out alot since the hatton fight…and are on good terms

still though…i believe rog is out on bail…and im not really sure when hes scheduled to be in court..the fight is a little over a month away…theres probably a chance he can still make it

Sorry to be off topic, but I just read Large’s article about Joan Benoit and Gabriele Andersen-Scheiss on the Sporting Blog.
I was recently wearing the No Mas Crest T-Shirt, and my brother was asking some questions about the brand, and logo which reads “The thrill of victory… The Ecstasy of defeat”. I explained the best I could, but this story is a perfect example of the motto.

Just saw both the Benoit piece and one on the late Budd Schulberg on TSB by Large. We were trying to track Budd down for an interview for a few months. I guess he was just too ill. Too bad Large’s one and only Budd piece is an obit.

I know this a little off topic.. But have you all seen this picture of Arreola at the Bradley/Campbell fight?

Dude is supposedly went into camp around 300 lbs and with a fight a month away. I now officially believe he has no chance not even a punchers chance since Dr. Iron Fist will see it coming from a mile away.
