Oh Word?

posted by Large

I’ve been trying to get up here with a report on Khan/Kotelnik all day, but various nuisances have kept me otherwise engaged. And then, well, then the other shoe falls and suddenly a Khan/Kotelnik recap seems about as pressing as a soft summer rain (though it was a pretty enjoyable fight on the whole – I’ll try and get a short piece up here with my thoughts either today or tomorrow).

So look, brothers of the Mas, if you don’t know, now you know – the shit is on like Donkey Kong. So many arguments, so many comments, so much dissension to be enjoyed in the ranks. I’m going to do a feature on this very topic for HBO this week, and when I’m done I’ll link it here and then I’ll be available to start moderating the madness. Until then, Brad, Ricky, and the rest of you maniacs… play nice.

Should be quite a war. I think this pretty much sets up a mini-welterweight tournament, too. The winner of this fight against the winner of Mayweather/Marquez (with the exception of a Cotto/Marquez matchup, which seems unlikely.

There is a definite lull right now, but starting in September boxing is back in a big big way

This should be a great great fight.. But I can’t help but already see the potential posts of “Cotto is a fading fighter and the 2 lb weight cut etc. etc.” or “Pacquaio was too small to fight that high etc. etc.” already.

This is a great match up and kudos to both men and promoters to getting it done. I hear Cotto’s title is on the line which means if Pacquiao wins it would give him 7 (?) world titles in different weight classes.

Is it just me or is everyone avoiding some guy by the name of Sugar Shane?

  4. Gene Says:

Not taking Shane at 140 may be a wasted oppurtunity, but I can’t fault the guy for taking the harder fight. At 145, this one seems like a toss up. This will be great to watch, but it seriously puts THE fight in serious jeopardy.

My early pick is Cotto by decision but I’d feel more comfortable with the pick if he got a real trainer.

  5. Coralskipper Says:

Cotto by KO. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Pac-Man, but he’s never faced a true welterweight with power. It’s not that Cotto is too large per se, I’d pick Pacquaio against Mosely or Floyd, but I think this specific welterweight has too much power. Of course, this is a case where nothing would make me smile more than to be wrong and see the fight turn out to be an all out war with both fighters chins holding up, so I kinda hope this early prediction is wrong.

  6. Trickster Says:

I will never again bet against Pac – so I’ll say Pac by destruction. I really think those two pounds will make a hell of a difference as well – damn team pac for it, why can’t this be at 147?

  7. Tinns Says:

Been loving destiny manifesting here with the inmates taking over the asylum as of late and Mr. Large getting, ah, paid you know (not that the psychiatrists aren’t still back there pulling the strings for us inpatients though).

And never again betting against Pac seems sound to me.

rooster…did you not see my reply in the thread below remembering gatti? shane comes out and says “you know what fuck it…i need money…i need a big fight…ill go to 140(i dunno how he thinks he can do that…the guy has balls of steel and i wouldnt doubt him)”….and boom…pacquiao is ready to head in the other direction

my initial thoughts on this matchup center around cottos weaknesses…

he better hire himself a new trainer…cotto does not fight well moving bacwards…off his backfoot…and he tires…i wonder if his best plan of attack would be to jump right on pac at the bell and stay all over him

  9. Kevin Says:

His best move is to borrow margaritos wraps!

Ricky. I didn’t see that post and I’ve looked for it.

should be an exciting fight, although i’m not sure cotto can be mentally/physically prepared for what pac-man is going to bring to the table (non-stop pressure and punches from ever direction/angle). i still have high hopes for an exciting fight, because i think cotto is still a strong, accurate puncher with a big heart (and because i’ve seen lesser punchers stun pacquiao), but i’ll be shocked if cotto wins this fight. against clottey, i thought cotto looked sluggish and slower than i’d ever seen him look (granted, the gaping wound above his eye was a factor). regardless, against manny that’s a recipe for disaster. and roach is a sharp/savvy trainer….if cotto wasn’t ripe for the pickin’ i think manny might’ve gone in another direction.
