Large on the Radio
A late reminder that I’ll be making my inaugural appearance on the Pound 4 Pound radio show tonight, an hour-long show that airs at 7 p.m. EST on Sirius/XM 98. Other than my esteemed self, the guests are Chris Arreola, Steve Cunningham and Stephane Larouche, who plays left wing for the Canadiens. No, wait… he’s Lucien Bute’s trainer.
I understand the topics that I’ll be addressing will be the Showtime Super Six tourney, the Pac/Cotto extravaganza, David Haye’s continuing ridiculousness and some other recent news today concerning Tomasz Adamek and Amir Khan. They’re also encouraging call-ins tonight, so do holla if you have the itch at 1-888-942-7326. I include below some links to recent pieces of mine from The Sporting Blog and my latest HBO article.
Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Questions Will Be Answered (HBO.com)
“Over the next four months, this match-up is certain to provoke a firestorm of debate among devoted followers of the sweet science. Both men are accomplished stars who inspire great passion in their fan base, and yet they have unanswered questions hanging over them at the moment, questions that will be settled once and for all when they fight in November.”
David Haye Is Ducking the Klitschkos (The Sporting Blog)
“I have no doubts that the Klitsckos were working him over big-time at the negotiating table, but them’s the ropes in this hustle, Hayeburger. You essentially have done nothing in your heavyweight career yet but talk a big game and wear cool t-shirts. You’re a former cruiserweight champ with a stoppage loss to Carl Thompson on your record. The most impressive scalp on your belt is a past-his-prime Jean-Marc Mormeck, who wasn’t all that impressive even when he was in his prime. No matter how much you blab, son, when your resume is that bloody thin, you’re going to have to settle for table-scraps if you want to sit at the king’s table, or even the king’s brother’s table.”
Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Big Fight, Good Fight (The Sporting Blog)
“Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions officially announced yesterday that the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fight, scheduled for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is a done deal at a catch-weight of 145 pounds. In what has been a strange, transitional year for the sweet science, this is likely to prove the only true super-fight of 2009 in terms of both the legitimacy of the match-up and the interest it generates.”
Kelly Pavlik: A Man Without a Plan (The Sporting Blog)
“Pavlik and his handlers now have themselves a serious problem. A boxing Machiavelli like Bob Arum has to be thinking to himself at this point, “Maybe, just maybe, Kelly Pavlik isn’t that good.” After all, he doesn’t really have any A-list scalps on his belt. He beat Jermain Taylor twice (who, of course, beat Hopkins twice in highly disputed decisions) but there is no one in the fight world left standing who will tell you that Jermain is or ever was a great boxer. A-plus potential, but Jermain probably maxed out at B-plus performance.”

I’m not sure why these boxers never come to The Rooster for advice. As you know, I handled the promotion and set up some of the biggest fights in the school yard in my youth. Yes, I would tell one kid, “hey, so and so said shit about yo’ mama.” It was on after the end of the school day bell. See…getting the best to fight one another isn’t that hard at all. These were true warriors who fought for the love of it. Yes, they did it for free and for status on the playground. Not sure if you knew this, but The Rooster was one of the only guys in elementary school who could walk the yard alone back in the day. Nuff said. The Rooster has spoken.
Also, The Rooster is still waiting for the first, No Mas party to take place. I-Berg seems like he knows a few important people in the city so he can hook-up and all you can drink for 20.00 bones for a couple of hours type of thing and show some legendary fights. All money raised to go to that George Coney dudes foundation or the Teddy Atlas fund. Once again, The Rooster has spoken.
The Rooster also wants to know when NO-MAS is going to come out with another legends shirt…of course with The Rooster on the shirt…The Rooster guarantees you that will be the best seller of all time.
Holla!

in defense of david haye(i dont know why)…i understood the reason he pulled out of the wlad fight was because of setanta sports…the network the fight was going to aired on….it went out of a business…and haye felt there was a chance that he would be completely stiffed and not paid on a guarantee with them
anyways…ill be working hard on setting up a trip to vegas in november…so maybe this time we can actually get up

I actually knew about the Valuev-Haye fight the night it got done. I was sworn to secrecy about it though. I think this is the right fight for all involved. I think Haye would have gotten mashed by the Klitschkos. If he is for real, and we still don’t know that for sure, he should beat Valuev. If he does beat Valuev – he becomes rival no. 1 for the Klits.
I’m actually looking forward to the W. Klit-Povetkin fight. Povetkin just strikes me as one of those guys who refuses to lose. Those are the type that give W. Klit problems. I expect that to be a competitve fight (though maybe not action-packed due to Klit’s holding) – believe it or not.

Kurt- you gotta give Haye some shit though for talking so much smack and pulling out of both fights. It still might work out for him, but I think he’s got some problems. What if he beats Valuev in a very boring fight, which seems to me a likely possibility? Gotta imagine the brothers K would love and excuse after this summer’s antics to say hey, Haye, fuck you man, you’re out of luck.
The thing I’m loving about Wlad/Povetkin is the Manny Steward/Teddy Atlas subplot. The television trainers. When’s the last time those two were in opposite corners?

German media report, that this could be another case of money-gate. It seems that Hayes payment is largly based on the TV-numbers and that the last sky (the uk-tv station that took over the fight after sentana crashed) pay-per-view (Khan-Kotelnik) did extremly low numbers. So Haye was in with the tougher of the two Klitschkos and possibly looking at very little reward. Still I agree Large, you can’t brash out about killing the klits and shit like that and then walk away twice.
Wlad plots Povetkin in six. He just hasn’t enough power – still be a good fight and funny to see Atlas in the corner.
I’m still pumped over the super-middle-tournament
.

If this wasn’t the same week as the paq-cotto announcement or the affliction mma bomb this haye story would be getting more heat.
Can we get a Rickey Henderson shirt or maybe a Billy Martin one.
Yo rooster, we can just crash those uniwatch parties and be bullys.

@Ricky: I’m hoping too that the AA-Taylor fight lands somewhere close here. There is talk about Stuttgart, which would be around two hours.
