Ten Reasons to Watch UFC 98
posted by Ariel Helwani
Look, I know some of you No Masians aren’t down with this whole MMA thing. Trust me, I get it. But also trust me when I say that the UFC is on some kind of roll right now, and the next three months may be the greatest stretch in its almost 16-year history with fights like Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir 2, Georges St-Pierre vs. Thiago Alves, Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva, BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian and Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on the horizon. If you were ever thinking about testing this sport out, now is the time.
The organization’s blockbuster summer kicks off this Saturday in Las Vegas at UFC 98, as Rashad Evans defends his light heavyweight title against Lyoto Machida, and Matt Serra finally gets his crack at his heated rival, Matt Hughes.
This event really has something for everyone, so here are 10 simple reasons why UFC 98 will live up to the hype.
10. “Diamond” Dave Kaplan faces George Roop. The last time Kaplan fought in the UFC, he looked like this:
9. Krzysztof Soszynski has won his last three fights via Kimura (arm lock) submission. Aren’t you dying to know if he can pull off a fourth straight kimura win against Andre Gusmao?
8. Phillipe Nover is representing Brooklyn against Kyle Bradley. He may be the most famous MMA fighter fighting out of the BK, and I know you brothers of the Mas can appreciate that.
7. Josh Koscheck knocked Yoshiyuki Yoshida into the next Millennium in December. Yoshida then decided to train with the famous Greg Jackson’s camp in preparation for his fight against Brandon Wolff. It’s always interesting to see how a fighter rebounds from a devastating KO.
6. Sean Sherk has only lost once as a lightweight. Yet, the former lightweight champion still gets no respect in the 155-pound division. I say people start to notice him again after he beats Frankie Edgar via decision.
5. Dan Miller is a perfect 3-0 in the UFC. Chael Sonnen looked really bad against Demian Maia at UFC 95. Miller will take another step up the 185-pound ladder, but Sonnen won’t go down easy.
4. Xavier Foupa-Pokam, a former Muay Thai fighter, faces the heavy-handed Drew McFedries. No chance this fight goes to the ground.
3. Matt Hughes and Matt Serra are about to settle the most heated feud in UFC history. Don’t believe me? This will convince you:
2. Rashad Evans will be defending his light heavyweight title against Lyoto Machida. This marks the first time that two undefeated fighters face off for a UFC title. Amazingly, Evans, the champ, is a 9-5 underdog.
1. Watch my parlay lock unfold: Hughes-Sherk-Yoshida-Miller. Book it.
None of those reasons convince you enough? Perhaps my appearance on ‘FOX Fight Game†will turn the trick.

I love, love, love Machida. My six months of shotokan karate training as a 7th grader require it. (Of course, the fact that El Hermano del Mero Mero is on the US Shotokan national team helps too…)
But as a favorite against Evans? Not so sure about that.

F’reals, El Mero? Damn. Yet another Masian whose ass I can’t kick. I’m beginning to think I wouldn’t win in a fight against anyone on this fucking site.

I don’t follow UFC but I’ve seen Rashad Evans fight. I must admit, it intrigues me that he’s the underdog against a guy I’ve never even heard of. That alone could get me out to a bar Saturday night. I also think I’d tune in to see Kaplan get his ass kicked.
You got me convinced Ariel, I’ll try and catch UFC 98. Why not, it’s an off weekend for boxing anyway.

Gene, your post warms my little heart. I don’t think you will regret your decision to watch the show somewhere on Saturday night.

i’m excited for this one. evans and machida are two of my favorite UFC fighters. i’m glad to see machida getting this title shot though. me and me mates thought that his style would lead to him just embarassing every light heavy they threw at him, with the powers that be hoping he’d eventually drop a fight so they’d never have to give him that title shot. the thiago silva fight and the rampage injury changed that rather quickly though.

You’d probably kick my ass, Large. If we expand this to “Family Members of No Masians” you might have trouble.

Both fighters were a bit tentative in the early going.
