Flanny Pacweather
posted by Large

I noticed in the comments to my previous post that the question at hand had turned to, dah, the question at hand. I’m amped for Cotto/Clottey, and for Floyd/Marquez as well, and we’ll get to those fights in due time.
But let’s face the facts, Masians – our little fistic cult suddenly has been occupied by a force much bigger than ourselves, and it goes by the name of… Flanny Pacweather. Moyd Maycquiao. Etc.
So I redirect you to a piece I wrote over at The Sporting Blog about this phenomenon, titled “Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Will it Happen?” Most of the content probably won’t be much of a revelation to the hardcore Masian audience, but I offer it nevertheless just to get the discussion rolling. Because, look, I know it’s all we really want to talk about.
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Will It Happen?
“… Arum said immediately after the Hatton fight that anyone looking to fight Pacquiao right now (and by ‘anyone,†I presume he means Floyd Anyone Mayweather Jr.) shouldn’t expect to get more than ’30 or 35% of the split. If you happen to be unfamiliar with the self-esteem of Mr. Mayweather Jr. or his general attitude concerning matters of finance, allow me to understate the case considerably and inform you that these terms are not likely to sit well with him.”

Well Bob Arum is 78 years old and I don’t mean to sound graceless but let’s face it, time isn’t on his side. I expect Arum to do whatever it takes to get Pacquiao in with Mayweather this year or early next year. The “30-35%” is total shit. If Hatton got 49% he’ll definately be willing to split with Mayweather. The fight doesn’t need promotion. You have Floyd and his entire family to entertain us on HBO’s 24/7, the general public is already familar with Floyd after Dancing with the Stars, WWE wrestling, MTV Cribs, and his commercials…..it’s going to happen soon and it will be huge.
Arum fought hard against Manny when he talked about pulling out of the Hatton fight back in january. I was suprised how hard Arum worked Manny to sign. The reason is Arum knew he’d beat Hatton and that would set up a dream fight with Mayweather. What he probably didn’t even dare dream of was a Tyson type KO in the second round that would get the entire sports world talking…..this is an opportunity that Arum won’t let slip away.

i hear you brad….and ive said on this site before…you have to hand it to to floyd and his team…they did a real good job of promoting floyd…and getting his name out there….whether it was the wildly popular dancing with the stars…or reaching out to budweiser drinking/nascar watching audience with the wwe….people know him…and they really made it look easy in doing so
and as large pointed out…haymon and arum cant stand each other…so i expect this negotiation to be drawn out with alot of posturing….i remember a time not too long ago when mayweather was with arum…and bob was heaping the same type of praise on floyd that he showers manny with now

On the topic of those as yet unreported Pac Hatton PPV numbers – http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/firstcuts/entry/view/24140/where_are_the_pacquiaohatton_ppv_numbers?
May 13th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
regarding the ppv, my cable company’s feed of the fight didn’t actually work (after about 2 minutes of the undercard, the screen started freezing up…after 45 minutes on hold, i told the customer service rep to cancel the order and went down the street to a bar that was showing the fight).
anyway, the cable guy claimed that there had been a bunch of calls with technical issues, so depending on how widespread this problem was, maybe it impacted/delayed the reporting of ppv numbers (i predicted 1.1 million, so i’m still keeping my fingers crossed).
then again, since i didn’t read anything in the national post-fight coverage, the technical issues may have been limited to my northern virginia cable provider.
is anyone else as excited about urango/berto as i am? i think berto’s dynamic, but, much like a prime zab judah, he’s more willing to go toe to toe with his opponent than he really needs to (given his physical tools/advantage). i see berto leading in an entertaining fight, before ultimately getting caught with something big in the middle rounds.

Here a good piece about the mysterious silence regarding the PPV buys of Pacquiao-Hatton.

Yeah, Rafael is saying the fight did about 825K , up to possibly 850K when its all added up. The reason Arum isn’t releasing the numbers is obvious. If Pacman- Hatton did fewer than Mayweather-Hatton, how is Arum going to justify Pacman getting more than 50-50 against Mayweather. Also, if Mayweather-Marquez outsells Pacman-Marquez 2, that will hurt Arum’s negotiating power too.
May 14th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Yeah – I think Floyd may have an argument that he should get the lion’s share of the PPV. Nobody likes him, but they buy his fights. Pacman sells alot more tickets though. This should be a 50-50 deal.
So who won the free No Mas merchandise? I know there were some folks who came in close to 850K. Is it The Price Is Right rules – where it’s the closest bid without going over?

Floyd may have an arguement but he’ll never get the lion’s share. Floyd should be hoping that Clottey beats Cotto, which is certainly possible. If that happens, Arum loses that “we’ll fight Cotto and make a fortune” option which he’ll no doubt use in negotiations. The second thing Floyd needs to happen is for him to not only to beat Marquez, but to look good doing it. A boring fight hurts Mayweather bad, even if he wins every round. If Mayweather destroys Marquez,I still don’t think he’ll never get the lion’s share. Pacquiao could always pull a “Mayweather” if Floyd demands too much. Say “I’m the best in the world and I have options, I don’t need you”. Floyd didn’t come back to boxing to fight Cotto or Mosley or Williams. Pacquiao and Arum know this. He passed on those fights long ago. He came back for Manny. Floyd needs to look good against Marquez, then maybe he’ll gain a split.

brad…floyd is going to dominate JMM…and even if he does it in a dull manner in which he wins every round….floyd will still find a way to use it to campaign for a manny fight…he will tell everyone how JMM beat manny twice
May 14th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I think a 50-50 split would be fair, but I’m not Manny. He’s the King right now. Floyd has only himself to blame for that. He walked away. Now the center of attention in the boxing world is Manny Pacquiao. So for the first time, Floyd is the one that “needs” an opponent. Floyd needs Manny. Hardcore fans saw the Pacquiao-JMM fights but the bigger ‘sports world’ didn’t notice those fights. 99% of people you talk to don’t know who Marquez is…they know Hatton from the Floyd fight, they know Oscar, of course, and they know Manny killed both of them. Floyd didn’t. That matters. This fight will happen, because it should. But not with Floyd getting even one penny more than Manny.

Marquez really has no chance against Pretty Boy? I guess we’ll all get into it all down the line, but come on, some of the lines I’m seeing with JMM almost as a 5-1 dog, that’s just crazy. Me and my boys call JMM God, so it’s not like I have any sort of unbiased or sensible take on this thing, but still, that’s gonna be a good go of it, even though Juanny takes way way too many shots.
The story for me is: how crazy is JMM? Pac too though. I mean those guys are just tearing through all the best guys everywhere (well, Marquez is anyways) in some kind of cat and mouse game with one another. If, IF IF if, JMM could decision Floyd, then Pacquiao and Marquez have basically made a mockery out of all other boxers (and boxing, I would argue) out there. Like they’re playing their own sport or something.

tinns my man…i feel the same way about JMM as you and yer boys do…love the guy
but im tellin ya…floyd is going to stop JMM…its early…but my early prediction is a tko…i havent decided if its going to be stopped by the third man in the ring or nacho waving the towel….floyd is going to be too big and too skilled for JMM…you saw the way baby bull was backing JMM up and hitting him flush…now imagine what a bigger guy with the skill level and pop of floyd can do…also someone who has the defense to avoid those uppercuts

The build-up for this one will be great – people love to hate Floyd, they will even love it more if he calls out and makes fun of the nice and gracious Pac-Man. It will be huge and it will happen –
if only JMM does not pull the trick. I don’t see it as wide as you do Ricky. I think the Floyd is so much bigger is pretty overrated. Floyd is not fighting like a bully, so him beeing a bit heavier won’t matter. I think JMM’s problem will be floyds longer arms. He will pot-shot his way to a decision, me thinks.

i hear you trickster…i love how people love to hate floyd…they are suckers…they truely buy into his persona…ive heard plenty of people who have had encounters with him in vegas…and they say hes about as nice and polite as they come…and he loves talking about the sport…i forget what fight it was…but floyd was ringside…and i noticed him stand up and start throwing punches as if he was one of the guys in the ring in that situation…ive also heard that he and pac are actually friendly and attend the same church on sundays when pac is in town
and trick…i can totally see floyd pot shotting his way to a decision….but im thinking floyd is going to try and make a statement because he wont think JMM can hurt him…i watched little juan diaz run JMM backwards and land on JMMs dome…what do u think someone with floyds size and skill level can do…especially if floyd isnt worried about getting hurt….i think floyd is going to have his foot on the pedal…maybe if he eats some counters and a great JMM uppercut…then maybe he backs off and starts working towards a decision…
