The Punisher

No Masians, wanted to share the Paul Williams videos we made for Everlast during their recent photo shoot at Gleason’s. In the main event, we have P-Will threatening to “retire” Winky, challenging Manny Pac, and sounding pessimistic about Cotto or Shane ever picking up his gauntlet.

Once again, we are gonna run a contest for Saturday night, and Large is gonna bless us with a full prognostification. Outcome predictions posted here will be eligible, and there will also be a prize for the best counter to Large’s analysis on Friday. Closest to the the winner and the round or the judges scorecards for a decision wins shirt of your choice. Hit it on the button and get five shirts of your choice or a shirt and a hoodie. Must post before the fight starts to win. Good luck good sirs.

After the jump are shorter topical clips, wherein we have Paul and his trainer George Peterson on the finer points of getting ducked, the secret origin of The Punisher, and the ol’ 1-2-3.

OK, going for a decidedly not interesting prognostification: Williams UD. I just see a scappy bout with not many clean shots going either way, which would be a perfect counterpoint to the wonderful card we saw last weekend. Williams UD win. Get in!

  2. Brad Says:

I’ll go with Winky Wright stopping Williams in the 11th. Williams will throw (and throw away) many punches early and will discover that Winky is by far the best boxer he’s ever faced. Winky will follow in the footsteps of Hopkins and Mosley Saturday. Hopkins exposed the younger Pavlik and Mosley exposed the younger Margarito….now it’s Winky turn to expose the many flaws in the younger Williams game…. It’s the year and half lay-off that bothers me. But what the hell, I love good defensive, smart, economical fighters against young, sloppy fighters. Williams will look very confused by the 6th round.

  3. Kent Says:

Yeah, it’ll be awhile before I forget that this is a guy who was schooled by Carlos Quintana at 147. I’m willing to forget it, but it’s gonna take a couple more quality wins. I’ll also take Winky except by split decision… 115-113, 116-112, & 113-115.

  4. Brad Says:

By the way, not to get off the topic of Wright-Williams but has anyone heard who Cotto is looking at as a trainer? I know Manny Stewart is good at coming in cold and working with guys he’s never worked with, but he’s got Wladimir Klitschko training at the same time so he would be out.

  5. Trickster Says:

I’ll wait with my prognostification till I see them on the scales… but, this has been a long layoff for Wright.

  6. Jonah Says:

I’ve got high hopes for Williams on this one. And I also never win anything when I make a logical bet. So I’m gonna throw in on Wright goes down in the 12th. Hoping Wirght gets frustrated getting hit too much and opens himself up a little too much. Also hoping Wright sticks to his word and avoids shelling up.

Met Williams, real nice guy. He’s gonna be a little sloppy when he starts up as always but he gets smart fast, and Wright doesn’t have the power and he’s too routine a fighter. I”ve got bets that this is going to be a real solid fight. Uneducated guess I know but I’m a dreamer.

  7. J. Says:

I got P-Will by UD…116-112, 116-112, 115-113. I don’t think Wright gets seriously hurt, but Punisher wins rounds with higher output, speed and flashier style.

  8. Robzilla Says:

I’m goin’ with Winky Wright by unanimous decision… 120-108, 119-109, 120-108… I know that Winky has alot goin’ against him, but I’m gonna go out on limb and say he whoops Paul Williams convincingly.

  9. Trickster Says:

I think the lay-off was too much for Winky. He won’t be able to go Pwills pace. I’d go for a corner stoppage after 8, but I don’t think PWill looks strong enough at 160. So I’ll say:

    Williams – Wright UD (2×118:110, 117:111).

  10. Kopper Says:

OK, I had said Williams UD up top, but I neglected to put scorecards. I will go with: 117-111, 116-112, 116-112.

  11. Charles Says:

P Will stops Winky in the 10th with a TKO. P Will gives him too much and Winky effectively gives up after a few.

  12. ricky roe Says:

williams has never been in the ring with someone as seasoned as winky…someone of that pedigree…winky is light years ahead of anyone williams has faced as far as ring intelligence…and this isnt 147…

winky is the better defensive fighter and the better counterpuncher….much better defense….paul has never really had to think in there and adjust to someone of winkys caliber…paul leaves himself open too much when he throws…and despite winkys perceived lack of power…i think he has enough to make williams pay and maybe really hurt paul( i like brads prediction of a possible late stoppage…but ill go another direction since he got there first)

people always say the way to beat winky is to out volume him and that he doesnt have the power to keep certain guys off of him….well JT and BHOP are much stronger and bigger than paul….he didnt have the power to keep tito off him either…yet he dominated him….you dont see anyone just running in on winky and getting off…this guy will take away yer offense….i think winky will come at paul…try to back him up and walk him down( i can see paul trying to give winky some awkward angles and throwing some awkward punches but it wont work)….and land shots….i see winky winning this one with a little of mosley/margs and a little of winky/mosley…but getting a late start after giving a few away to figure out paul….gonna go with winky by MD…114-114…115-113…116-112

and brad….as far as cotto…i heard a good one…how about a guy that well see tonight…dan birmingham??…cotto does want to train in florida…not to mention clottey has a similar defensive style as winky…he may be able to help slightly…maybe add a lefthanded wrinkle to cotto…although i dont think cotto needs a whole lot of work…hes kind of a guy who trains himself…but it might make sense

  13. Freddmoney Says:

I’m gonna take P-Will stopping Winky in the ninth. You gotta think Winky will play a lot of defense, but I think Paul makes him open up after a while and i think he really gets to him by the ninth. I don’t think Winky handles the P-Will’s power after long.

  14. ricky roe Says:

oh i gotta agree with you freddmoney….paul will make winky open up…after winky has him figured out and he can time him perfectly…winky will open up when paul leaves himself open to be hit!

you really think paul is stronger and has more power than JT? you really think winky is going to absorb that many shots?

  15. Trickster Says:

After the Mosley fight I’m cautious, but man, I don’t think Ricky you should see Winky as the same man he was, when he fought JT. He is getting older and he was inactive for too long… that is not a good combination. If he is still the old Winky from the Taylor or Mosley fight he beats Pwill…. I think he is not.

  16. ricky roe Says:

i hear you trickster…the layoff…the age…we just wont really know until its over or maybe halfway over…something we really have no way of gauging…but i really trust winkys skill and competition levels…

  17. Nick Says:

I think Winky shows Paul up in the grand Hopkins-Pavlik, Mosely-Margarito, JMM-Diaz style. P-Will has already been timed once by Quintana and, although the style will be different, Wink is the guy to do it again. Also, I think Winky is more comfortable at 160 than Paul. It’ll be close, but Winky has enough left in the tank for this.

    Wright SD (116-112, 115-113, 113-115)

  18. Tinns Says:

I’ll get on the record here with The Wink by UD at 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112. Winky hasn’t taken much damage over the course of his career, and his game is designed for longevity, being based on savvy and a freak upper body the way it is (the layoff, however, does concern me–particularly if I’m gonna give him 9 rounds).

Quintana executed a perfectly thought-out game plan almost as well as I’ve ever seen in the first fight there, and I can’t shake that yet. If PWill cleans out Winky, no matter what Winky looks like, then I`m on board 100%. But let`s see it first tonight.

  19. Gene Says:

I’ll take Winky by UD (116-112, 116-112, 118-110). Two years ago Winky was probably the best fighter at 160. I can’t go against him when Williams has only fought Andy Kolle at this weight class.

  20. Brad Says:

I think Dan Birmingham would be a nice fit for Cotto. I agree Cotto doesn’t need “a lot of work” but a few little things might help. He has a great jab,a fantastic body attack, a good uppercut and inside game. I think the only thing Cotto really needs “work” on is his defense. His chin is like granite, but a few shoulder and head feints coming in would keep opponents off. Winky is a master making slight movements and making opponenets miss. I have no idea how much Birmingham has to do with this but if Cotto could add this to his already solid game I think it would put him on top of a very strong group of fighters.

  21. Geegz Says:

man i’ve been impressed by p-will the last few times i’ve seen him. this guy is a machine, and the way he stayed calm with the cut against verno phillips and just wore his ass down was workmanlike, to say the least. like large made a point of…. winky been laid off for a long fucking time and he’s old as balls. this fight just means more to williams. i was real close with my prognostification the last time we did this and i’m going with these specific specifics this time around: i got williams with a late stoppage. a softening of the body the first half of the fight, a gassed winky from about the 8th round on, and a two knockdown 11th complete with winky wright mouthpiece spittages with the doc stopping it between rounds! take it to the bank!

  22. ricky roe Says:

its pretty funny…i watched the fight at my boys house…he was with me when pdub knocked quintana out…and right before he came out i asked him if he remembered how williams came to “get on up” by james brown….looked like he was humming that shit in his head all night…singing to himself as he threw punches….

remind me to check emanuel steward’s computer before making my next prediction

  23. Trickster Says:

Redemption after that MArgarito and Juan Diaz fiasco!

  24. I-Berg Says:

Trickster is our winner ekeing out a close one over Briks. But gotta say majority of Masians thought it was gonna be turn back the clock night and that did not happen. One thing I want to point out even though it’s pure speculation is that Winky’s body to me looked like he did not use performance enhancers–he had a certain thickening which should come with his years. Compare his body to Bhops and Shane’s (even though he was never quite the specimen they were) and I think you see what natural vs unnatural aging really looks like. Peep especially the growing size of Shane’s head and think about Bond’s incredibly expanding melon…
