Rubin "Hurricane" Carter
"Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night" - so begins Bob Dylan's
epic "Hurricane," and such remains the source of great mystery and
controversy in the life of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. The one-time
contender for the middle weight crown is far more famous today as
having been convicted and then, twenty years later, acquitted for a
1966 triple-murder shooting spree at a bar in Paterson, New Jersey.
Passions still run deep about this case, and the fact remains that today the
drama of Carter's life outside the ring has almost entirely obscured his
achievements inside it.
Those are the achievements that we celebrate with this t-shirt, those of
an innately ferocious fighter who learned his trade in prison, a
damn-the-torpedoes practitioner of "the manly art of no defense," and a
puncher of such startling volume and power that to call him "Hurricane"
never seemed a question of colorful nicknaming so much as a merely an
accurate description of a phenomenon in motion.
