Havana Yacht Club Founded in 1886 near the golden beaches of Marianao, the Havana Yacht Club, once the jurisdiction of tyrants and businessmen and artists of international renown, is today a dignified but dilapidated residence for the ghosts of prerevolutionary Cuba. You can almost hear the sun-drenched daughters of sugar tycoons giggling by the pool, taste the fresh mint in the endless pitchers of mojitos and see the hulls of the world�s most extravagant sailboats anchored in its natural harbor. The crest that inspired this shirt, inlayed on the marble landing of a staircase leading down to the now ruined docks, is one of the best surviving reminders of what once was. Someday when Fidel is gone and the money comes flooding back to Cuba, the HYC will undoubtedly regain its status as the playground of plutocrats. But as with so many things in this country, something indescribable will be lost in that translation.
