| The signature resort of the Catskills’ glory years, Grossinger’s (est. 1919) famously hosted training camps for heavyweights from Rocky Marciano to Evander Holyfield. But perhaps the most famous training ever done—or not done—at Grossinger’s was by Ingemar Johansson before his 1959 heavyweight title fight with Floyd Patterson.
Johansson brought his whole family to the resort, including his young Swedish fiancée, and proceeded to spend the majority of his camp night-clubbing and canoodling with his lady. Fight men frowned, but something in the Catskill air must have agreed with Johannson, as he shocked the world with his right-hand “Hammer of Thor”, knocking Patterson down seven times in the third round before the referee put a stop to the carnage.
