There aren’t many places left in the sport of boxing that boast so rich a past as Gleason’s Gym. Ali trained there for the first Liston fight, champions like LaMotta, Basilio, and Duran called it home, while trainers like Whitey Bimstein and Ray Arcel plied their toilsome trade beside them.

Opened in the Bronx in 1937 by ex-fighter Bobby Gleason (née Peter Gagliardi), the gym today is the last remaining link to the golden era of the sweet science in New York City, the era of Mike Jacobs, Stillman’s, and the majesty of the old Garden. Bobby Gleason always fashioned his gym to be first and foremost a “maker of boxing champions” and in its current Brooklyn location it has continued mightily in that tradition.

From Sugar Ray to Sugar Shane, from Carlos Ortiz to Carlos Monzon, the list of fighters who have honed their skills inside Gleason’s Gym reads like a veritable history of the sport itself.
