Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini The Italian-American son of a boxer who saw his championship dreams dashed in the Second World War, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini inherited more than just a nickname from his fighting father--he inherited a style, an attitude, and a burning desire to undo the disappointments of the past. As Mancini climbed boxing's ranks in the late seventies and early eighties, the American fight public fell in love with the kid from Youngstown, Ohio. His family history, his relentless whirlwind of punches and his ability to both dish out and take massive punishment all conspired to make one of the most telegenic fighters of his era. In May of 1982, in one of the most furious first rounds in the history of boxing, Mancini TKOed Arturo Frias and took the WBA Lightweight crown. Ray would later say that the proudest moment of his life was hearing his father praise him in the ring following that victory. After that night, the Mancini camp added some new lettering to Ray's classic training t-shirt: "World Champion". This is a reproduction of that shirt: a small piece of the title that the Mancini family could finally call their own. |
