Opened by inveterate gambler, moonshiner and all-around delinquent Benny Binion in 1951, Binion’s Horseshoe Casino never veered far from its founder’s simple mission statement - “good food, good whiskey, good gamble.” Always known to accommodate the highest of high rollers, Binion’s was a natural host for The World Series of Poker, which got its start at the Horseshoe in 1970. Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson and of course the great Stu Ungar all took the top prize in the tournament’s glory years at Binion’s, and today just the idea of the place in its heyday is enough to conjure an image of the old, gangster’s Vegas, and of the many poker legends who made their names inside its smoke-saturated and seedy atmosphere.
