Manolete (1917-1947)
The most celebrated bullfighter in Spanish history, Manolete was a thin man with dramatic courage. His appearance in the ring was as awkward as his technique was flawless, and crowds clamored for the man "with a face as dreary as a third-class funeral on a rainy day." From his stunning debut in 1939, he dominated the bullfighting scene and became its first international superstar, dazzling crowds in Spain and South America with the grave daring of his unadorned passes and the brutal precision of his kills.

His fame made the most dangerous sport even more dangerous. As crowds and promoters demanded more fights with closer passes, serious gorings became more frequent. Manolete saw clearly that this dark trend could cost him his life, but his pride wouldn't allow him to turn down challenges from rival fighters or suffer the shame of walking away from a public that had made him a hero.

Against his own good sense, and the advice of those close to him, he continued to fight until August 28, 1947, when he was gored in the thigh as he drove his sword into a fierce Miura bull named Islero. His tragic death was mourned around the world, and the Spanish, whose demands could never have been met, looked back with admiration and collective shame on a man who gave everything he had to the sport, and to his crowds.
