ALI THE GREATEST
Today, with a career’s worth of achievements as a fighter and a man to back it up, Ali’s most famous utterance reads like a statement of simple fact. But before his 1964 encounter with Sonny Liston, most observers considered Ali’s self-evaluation to be pure hubris. Of course, that didn’t stop Ali, then Cassius Clay, from releasing a 1963 album titled “I Am The Greatest” or from predicting before the fight that he would stop Sonny in “round eight, to prove I’m great.” For his doubters this was just more ticket-selling babble from a bigmouth who would soon eat his words. But when Liston didn’t get up for the seventh, leaving Ali to shout those words again as the new Heavyweight Champion of the World, “I am the Greatest!” suddenly had to be acknowledged as true prophecy. This t-shirt is inspired by the fonting on a button Ali once gave out to admirers and the hope that the power of his self-affirmation is contagious.
