Muhammad Ali once famously volunteered, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” By the early 70s, finding peace and quiet was becoming as difficult for Ali as the train- ing itself. After a forced three-year hiatus from the ring and first career loss, he badly needed a place to put his nose to the grindstone. In 1972, he built a sanctuary in the Pocono Mountains near Deer Lake, PA. From then on, he trained at Deer Lake for every fight including the “Rumble in the Jungle”, “Thrilla in Manila” and the rematch victory over Leon Spinks that made Ali the first and still only three-time Heavyweight Champion of the World. This shirt, modeled after one worn by Ali and his trainers at Deer Lake, celebrates that singular achievement and the hard work it took to make it happen.
